At the meting on 23rd October, John Alcock and Mike Gass gave a talk, accompanied by colourful slides on “Oxford in Bloom”.  This organisation was established 21 years ago and since 1986 has won its section of Britain in Bloom four times.  Divided into 22 categories there are between 400 and 500 entries each year and the competition is judged over a period of one week only, usually around 20th July.  This enterprise obviously relies on the support of the community bband most of the prize money is obtained by sponsorship.  Judging in all categories is based first on general impression, then on the choice and quality of the planting, cleanliness and tidiness of the site, whether plants have been dead-headed, tasteful arrangement etc.

We were shown may slides of a miscellany of exhibits; pubs, shops, front and back gardens – large and small – patios and balconies, all within Oxford City boundaries.  Most of the planting consisted of annuals in a riotous display, but some of the gardens contained perennial, more permanent specimens.  The pride taken by gardeners in the disabled category was very evident and overall it was apparent that this annual competition gives a great deal of pleasure to many residents of Oxford.

Our 2007 programme starts on 22nd January, when Peter Toms will talk to members about summer bulbs.  On 26th February our Chairman, Peter Sheasby, will take us on a trip along the River Swere in Oxfordshire.  New members and visitors will receive a warm welcome.
